Cactus High School, a perennial contender in Arizona’s 5A football conference, entered the 2024 state championship looking to break a string of title-game heartbreaks. After upsetting top-seeded ALA Gilbert North, the Cobras faced longtime rival Desert Edge with high hopes—but once again fell short.
Desert Edge set the tone early with an 84-yard touchdown pass and capitalized on Cactus turnovers, including a 74-yard fumble return by linebacker Joshua Hopphaus. The Scorpions built a commanding 28-0 lead behind quarterback Blake Roskopf’s dual-threat performance.
Cactus mounted a late comeback, scoring three unanswered touchdowns—two by Tristan Varga and one by Tayejion Player—but two blocked extra points by Desert Edge’s Jamar Beal-Goines proved decisive. His final block in the last minute sealed a 28-19 victory and the 5A state title for the Scorpions, extending Cactus’ championship drought.
