After capturing their first state championship in 17 years during the 2023-24 season, Deer Valley High School’s boys basketball team aimed to repeat the feat but fell just short. Entering the 4A playoffs as the No. 4 seed, the Skyhawks dominated their early matchups to return to the title game, where they faced a taller and formidable No. 3 seed St. Mary’s. Despite a slow start and trailing much of the game, Deer Valley rallied to force overtime. However, key shots in extra time eluded them as St. Mary’s secured a 59-55 win. Star performances from Sergio Gonzales and Tyran Simpsom kept the Skyhawks competitive, but St. Mary’s Cameron Williams proved too much, leading all scorers. While the season ended with a runner-up trophy, head coach Jed Dunn praised his team’s resilience, heart, and exceptional journey.
